‘Brenda’ earned admittance to a Surgery Technician program at a private college. But when she asked the college to accommodate her disability, she was denied. In fact, her professor publicly disclosed her disability to everyone in her program, and she was even scolded by the college for having ever applied given her condition. Brenda was promptly kicked out. More egregious yet, the college kept money from the student loan on which Brenda was attending. The Disability Legal Center took up Brenda’s case, filing discrimination complaints with the Department of Justice and the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. With DLC’s representation, Brenda was reimbursed tuition and awarded monetary relief for how she was mistreated. And the college was required to establish a new Disability Resource Center so people like Brenda will never be wronged based on a disability again.
