How do I set up a planned gift?

We welcome a variety of planned gifts that can be tailored to your estate planning, financial, and philanthropic goals. Common options include:

  • Bequests in a will or living trust
  • Beneficiary designations for retirement plans (such as IRAs or 401(k)s)
  • Designation of life insurance policies or donor-advised funds
  • Charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts
  • Gifts of appreciated assets, like stocks or other securities

Each type of gift allows you to leave a lasting legacy while helping us advance access to justice in Utah.

How do I set up a planned gift?

A good first step is to discuss your intentions with your financial advisor, attorney, or estate planning professional. They can help you identify the best type of gift for your situation.

Once you’ve decided, you’ll document your gift with language that names “And Justice for All” as a beneficiary. We can assist with [sample bequest language] and connect you with resources that simplify the process.

What is an unrestricted gift, and why is it important?

An unrestricted gift allows “And Justice for All” to address the most urgent needs in our community at any given time. This might mean supporting housing rights, disability advocacy, or emergency legal services, depending on the challenges Utahns are facing. This flexibility ensures your legacy can respond to future needs we can’t yet predict and helps keep the civil legal aid network strong over the long term.

Can I designate my gift for a specific purpose?

Yes. While we encourage unrestricted gifts for their flexibility, you can designate your gift to support a specific area of our work, such as:

  • Housing stability
  • Disability rights
  • Domestic violence and family safety
  • Legal aid for marginalized or underrepresented communities

We work closely with donors to make sure their intentions are clearly documented and honored.

Are there tax benefits to making a planned gift?

Planned gifts can offer meaningful tax advantages for you and your heirs. Including “And Justice for All” in your estate plan may reduce estate taxes or provide other favorable tax treatment.

Because each situation is unique, we strongly recommend that you consult with your financial advisor and/or attorney to understand the tax benefits available to you.

What recognition will I receive if I make a planned gift?

We deeply value each donor’s legacy. Donors who notify us of a qualifying planned gift are invited to join the “And Justice Forever” Legacy Circle, our recognition society for legacy supporters.

Benefits include special recognition at the Justice Rising Breakfast, invitations to select events, and other member benefits.

If you prefer to remain anonymous, we will fully respect your wishes. Letting us know about your intentions is extremely helpful for future planning, but public recognition is always your choice.

Can I change my planned gift if my circumstances change?

Yes. Many planned gifts can be revised if your needs or priorities change. You can usually update your will, trust, or beneficiary designations at any time.

If you adjust or remove a gift to “And Justice for All” we would appreciate it if you let us know so we can keep our records up to date.

Do I need to tell you if I’ve included “And Justice for All” in my estate plans?

You are not required to notify us, but we are very grateful when donors do so we can thank you and celebrate you as a member of the “And Justice Forever” Legacy Circle.

Knowing about your intentions also helps us plan for the future and gives us the opportunity to welcome you into the “And Justice Forever” Legacy Circle, thank you properly, and ensure we understand any specific wishes you may have for your gift. You can choose whether your membership is recognized publicly or kept confidential.

Is there a minimum amount required to join the “And Justice Forever” Legacy Circle?

No. There is no minimum gift amount required.

We know that every estate and every donor is different. What matters most is your decision to include “And Justice for All” in your long-term plans and your commitment to advancing equal access to justice.

What information do I need to include “And Justice for All” in my will or beneficiary designation?

Your advisor may ask for our legal name and tax identification number. We can provide this information, along with sample language, to help you and your professional advisors complete your documents accurately.
