Kate gets the help she needs to get away from a controlling spouse while battling cancer

When Kate applied to Legal Aid Society, she was facing a controlling spouse whose attorney was bombarding her with multiple motions and extensive discovery requests. Not only was she overwhelmed with this, but she was also battling cancer. Kate was struggling with balancing the obligations of representing herself in a legal case while undergoing rigorous cancer treatment. She was left exhausted and turned to Legal Aid Society, where her attorney and paralegal took over her case and managed the prosecution in order for her to focus on pursuing cancer treatment.
After obtaining temporary orders, Legal Aid was able to negotiate favorable terms to finalize the case and obtain a Decree of Divorce. Legal Aid negotiated a provision in the decree that was of particular security to Kate, where if her cancer returned she would be able to seek alimony by motion, rather than a Petition to Modify. By the time that the Decree of Divorce was settled, Kate’s cancer was in remission and she had fortunately re-entered the workforce. Kate told her attorney that she attributed part of her recovery to Legal Aid taking away the stress of handling her divorce case so successfully.
